You've heard about carbon offsetting, where your decision to drive a Hummer or fly by private jet can be "offset" by paying a fee to a company like TerraPass to reduce your carbon footprint elsewhere. But what about hate offsetting? As in, if you want to buy a product from somebody who supports anti-gay efforts, can you offset your funding of homophobia by giving money to a pro-gay cause?
No, you cannot. And it's ridiculous to assume you could.
Except that's what the website GayGamer was advising video gamers this summer who absolutely had to purchase the Xbox 360 title Shadow Complex, which is based on sci-fi writer Orson Scott Card's Empire series. Which means in all likelihood (we haven't read the contracts) that your purchase of Shadow Complex from Chair Entertainment and Epic Game puts money directly into the pocket of Card, the National Organization for Marriage board member who thinks men and women become gay through childhood rape or molestation. (Card also called for the overthrow of government if Prop 8 didn't pass.)
By many accounts, Shadow Complex is a fantastic game. And just because it's benefiting a virulent homophobe isn't enough to keep some players from buying the game. So if you must have it, GayGamer advises you "offset" the hate funding by donating a few bucks to a gay charity. Will that be enough to keep you with a clear conscious?
It shouldn't.
Putting money directly into the hands of parties who campaign against gay rights is hard to defend on any level, even if you're also giving money to groups fighting for gay rights. You cannot have it both ways.

You cannot buy Stephenie Meyer's Twilight — which, because she is Mormon, some 10 percent of her profits will end up going to the Church's anti-gay crusade — and then also donate the same amount to the Courage Campaign. You are still funding hatred. You don't get to stay at Prop 8-funder Doug Manchester's Hyatt hotel in San Diego and then write a check for the price of your room and mini bar addiction to Equality California.
Consider the second-grade logic: It's the equivalent of donating cash to Protect Maine Equality and Stand For Marriage Maine. You wouldn't consider that scenario. So why are you considering the others? Because you absolutely must buy products that benefit civil rights rapists?
You might be able to find a moral excuse in there somewhere. We can't. But we're willing to be swayed.

They say silence is golden. I agree.
However, the only way for me to get silence in my head is to complete tasks. That is one thing about my mild OCD that no one gets. Until I complete certain things I can't really relax. Let's say there is a list in my head of things to do each day. If I miss something it moves to the next days list. I can hear the list in my head all day. For example I know that on Thursdays I change the bed. I have to change the bed on Thursdays. That's just how it is. If I can't, for whatever reason, that task adds to another day's list and that day's list gets louder in my head because there is too much on it. Does that make any sense? It's a bit more literal that the *actual* chatterings of my OCD brain as I see it, but pretty accurate as far as explanation. The only difference is a lot of what I feel compelled to do is autopilot. I automatically sweep kitty litter and vacuum the stairs everyday when I get home. I swiffer furniture on certain days, ect... I don't have to normally t!
ie it to a day. Whatever. The list scenario works. Now that you know I'm a nut-job, here's the point...
It was expressed to me that the last time Richard's mother visited she felt she couldn't touch anything when I am around. I may be miss quoting or making stuff up (as I am oft accused) but that was my impression. So I have been making a CONSCIOUS effort to be less... cleaning up after anyone moves. It is making me crazy! My brain is SCREAMING at me every second I am home about STUFF I NEED TO DO!! I am miserable in my own house. I don't want to look at it, sit in it, be in it UNTIL I FEEL CAUGHT UP!!
But I can't get caught up without time alone. And yes I know in my head that Richard is doing his best to keep things as we like them. I do. And I appreciate it more than I have told him.
BUT HE FORGETS MY TOUCH OF THE CRAZY!
It's only a week (and a day, grr!) We will all survive the Mother In Law visit. Hopefully our relationship will too. But I am taking some mental health hits over here... I need to wash the floor, wash every towel, vacuum all surfaces, and bleach things. Sorry.

So if you follow my Twitter stream at all, which I'm sure you do, then you know I was in Yuma yesterday. I know what you're thinking. OMG WTF Yuma?! Haha, yes. You see it is pretty much the halfway mark between Phoenix and San Diego and as such it was where Brian of Cheap Blue Guitar and myself decided to meet. Of course it was a year after deciding that we finally did it! I packed up my man Richard and he packed up Dyanna (@dyanna on Twitter) and we each set out on our 250+ mille journeys.
Oi. It's totally farther than you think. Richard and I arrived a bit early and went off to explore the mall while Brian and Dyanna did their last 40+ miles. Haha. At exactly 2 PM Daniel from danielphillip.com and Brian of cheapblueguitar.com met face to face. So if your internet konked out at that time or you saw a blinding light, now you know why. LOL. Internet personalities collided. Once we did the always weird 'I read you and chat with you everyday yet NOW we're meeting' thing, it was like chatting with old friends. It took a bit tho, because our waiter wouldn't give us more than 2 minutes alone at a time. Poor ADD kid... Anyhoo, Brian and Dyanna are as awesome as you think. We gabbed a lot, enjoyed the unique culinary flair of The Outback, and the air conditioning. (I don't know if you know this about Yuma, but it's hot. It is past all these sand dunes and really in the desert. It was, I kid you not, eleventy million degrees out there.)
So after lunch we decided to treck out and explore the city.. erm, town. It was kinda like a ghost town. There was no one out, what with the oppressive heat. Also there is not much to see. But that in itself made it fun. We'll always have Yuma! And I have added two more people to my list of Real Life friends!
Pictures were taken and I've swiped them all...

So I have to admit it... All the hoopla about MMS for iPhone and my 'sexting' comments (I love that!) got me wondering. Have you 'sexted'? I mean via cell phone, sent pictures and received pictures and talked dirty and got... erm, off with someone?

Today was my day off! It was a super productive day. I got my car warshed, did some light cleaning, grocery shopped, the usual. However, much to my happy surprise, my man did some DEEP CLEANING due to his mother visiting. My home is positively sparkling! The down side is... Ughz. Mother in law visitation. She and I, we don't get along real well. In fact every time she visits there is high drama and fighting. My relationship is at risk every time she crosses the threshold.
I shouldn't say that. I am sure this time will be different! I am thinking positive thoughts! (I better buy some vodka, just in case tho)
In other news, Kyle Hunter. I mentioned him once or twice. My current news crush... *sigh* It is my mission to meet him. He is local news here in San Diego. Weather. He is on Twitter. He responds to my @replies. Most recently I had tweeted that he should have iWeatherman.com tee shirts (his before FOX weather website, where he'd do the weather in jeans..). He started a Cafe Press shop that day. Haha! It's just a good idea, I doubt it had anything to do with me. But still! So of course I ordered a shirt... I'm lucky Richard isn't the jealous type.
Anyhoo, that's all I got for now. Adios me compadres!
